4 PM An Afternoon with Hedy Lamarr I live-tweeted this Back Lane Studios’ fundraising event. Part of the Extraordinary Women Series it started with an introudction by Ellen Moorehouse of Back Lane Studios and the playing of two small short films produced by Grade 12 students about merchants in Roncesvalles Village.  There was a screening of the documentary Calling Hedy Lamarr. Ms. Lamarr was a Hollywood star, inventor, and wireless pioneer and an enigma of a character. Following the documentary there was a panel discussion with: Imogen Coe @RySciDean, Dean, Ryerson University’s Faculty of Science; Alex Ferworn, Professor, Ryerson’s Department of Computer Science, and Nathalie Atkinson @NathAt, Globe and Mail columnist and film critic.  400 Roncesvalles Ave., Toronto ON. $14 general admission,  $11 members, seniors and students. April 11-13, 2014 Bitcoin Expo 2014 “In Cryptography We Trust”, Metro Toronto Convention Center, Toronto, ON. This was the first Bitcoin Expo to come to Canada and was shaping up to be one of the largest international Bitcoin gatherings to date. Over 80 SPEAKERS were expected including Jeffrey Tucker, Jeff Burwick, Joseph David, Michael Turpin, Elizabeth Ploshay, Cody Wilson, Stephanie Murphy, Adam B. Levine, Andreas Antonopoulos and Jason King, and Erik Voorhees (tentative). An Expo hall housed over 30 exhibitors and served as a networking meeting space. A half day of free seminars was included for those just getting into Bitcoin was offered with optional full access packages.

TUES Dec. 3 to 10, 2013 First Annual Crowdfunding World Summit (2013)   (WebSummit). More than 70 experts with cutting-edge presented information, steps, and advice on how to use Crowdfunding. Five or six speakers were scheduled each day. The Dec. 3 at 10 AM PST (online until Dec. 4 1 PM): OPENING DAY SPEAKER: Karen Kerrigan, Co-host and sponsor of the Summit. Karen was one of the original influencers who lobbied Capitol Hill to bring about the new law.  WED Dec. 4 from 10 AM PST (online until Dec. 5 1 PM): KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Jay Abraham the celebrated and internationally respected authority on entrepreneurship. Nov. 25, 2013 7:00 to 8:00 PM Publish Your Story Online with Wattpad, Toronto Public Library, Maria A. Shchuka Learning Centre (Eglinton Ave. W. near Dufferin Street). Wattpad is a free online social platform that allows you to share your fiction, non-fiction and poetry. In this session participants were shown how to create an account,upload a story, and learned about copyright choices. A librarian also introduced other sources to help in becoming a proficient writer.

Author and Globe Style columnist Sheryl Steinberg launched her debut novel at this event sponsored by Key Porter Books with former broadcast journalist, now PR strategist and founder of Building Blocks Communications, Charmain Emerson. Sheryl and CP24’s resident guru of geek Andy Walker battled it out in a “He Said She Said” look at Twitter and other techie trends.
GM Note: I attended this event and purchased Sheryl’s book. A book I found very entertaining.
